OPERATOR MAINTENANCE
MILITARY MOUNTAINEERING KITS
THEORY OF OPERATION
The Military Mountaineering Kits (MMKs) improve Soldier and Marine mobility in a high angle/mountainous
environment by increasing safety, lightening the load, and enhancing day and night capability. These
Mountaineering Kits are intended to support platoon to company sized units and assault teams with
improved performance while providing safer movement for personnel moving over steep and vertical
earth, rock, snow, and ice. Each kit consists of items such as carabiners, harnesses, and rope to perform
the type of operations indicated by each named Kit.
All items are commercial-off-the-shelf (COTS) items which require only user maintenance such as general
cleaning and inspection. Items not meeting the standard for serviceability, as determined during before-
use inspection, shall be replaced. No repair of the items is allowed by the user or any other level of
maintenance providers.
The only maintenance authorized aside from basic cleaning is during the warranty portion of the items life
and only by the original manufacturer. Should an item show normal wear and tear or damage during
inspection that is deemed to make it unserviceable, then it will be turned-in to the proper supply channel
for disposition. At that point, a new one must be procured via replenishment kit.
