Snowshoe, Assault, Military
The modular, injection-molded snowshoe (Figure 34) is used in steep and side-hill terrain. It includes a
removable 8-inch tail for use on packed or powdery snow, and a heel-raise device to prevent excessive
lower leg muscle fatigue on steep slopes. The universal strap system is usable while wearing mittens.

Transceiver, Avalanche
The avalanche transceiver (Figure 35) is used whenever there is danger of an avalanche. It emits a
pulsed signal, on 457kHz, that another avalanche transceiver can receive. When a user is buried in an
avalanche and wearing a transceiver that is transmitting, another user can place his transceiver in
"Receive" mode, orient it to the strongest signal, and locate the buried person.
